The K-pop world is no stranger to dramatic exits, but what happens when idols step off the stage? For several former girl group members—including Kim Garam, Soojin, and Yulhee—the answer lies in bold, often unexpected transformations as they reshape their lives outside the spotlight.
Kim Garam – LE SSERAFIM
Kim Garam, once introduced as the center of HYBE’s rookie group LE SSERAFIM, exited the industry just 19 days after debut due to school bullying allegations. Despite denying the claims, the circulation of an alleged school violence committee document intensified scrutiny.

Her contract with Source Music was terminated shortly after. Today, she has returned to academics, graduating from the School of Performing Arts Seoul and entering Konkuk University’s Media Acting Department in 2024. Notably, she contributed behind the scenes on a university production, credited as part of the directing team—hinting at a quiet but creative new beginning.
FIFTY FIFTY’s Members

Meanwhile, FIFTY FIFTY’s meteoric rise with viral hit “Cupid” gave way to controversy when all members filed for contract termination with ATTRAKT in mid-2023. Although public opinion initially leaned in their favor, leaked recordings and legal disputes flipped the narrative. While member Keena returned to the agency, the remaining three members formed a new group, Ablume, which has struggled to regain their previous momentum.
Youngseo – ILLIT

Youngseo, who had been poised to debut with ILLIT via HYBE’s survival program R U Next?, abruptly withdrew before debut, later citing mental stress. She has since shifted her focus to academic pursuits.
Soojin – (G)-IDLE
Soojin, formerly of (G)I-DLE, also faced bullying allegations in 2021 that led to her departure. After more than two years of silence, she reappeared in June 2023, launching personal social media and signing with BRD Communications. Her solo debut sparked excitement among fans, though public discourse around her past continues.

Yulhee – LABOUM
Another notable case is Yulhee, who departed from LABOUM in 2017 to marry FTISLAND‘s Choi Minhwan, becoming the youngest K-pop idol bride at just 20. She embraced family life, giving birth to three children before divorcing in 2023. Despite the tabloid-fueled fallout, including false accusations regarding Choi, Yulhee is now carving out a new career in acting, steadily regaining her place in the public eye.

Each of these women has navigated the complex aftermath of fame differently—some stepping into academia, others pursuing solo artistry or parenthood. No longer confined to their past as idols, they are gradually redefining what it means to “debut” in life after K-pop.
